I decided this year to comment on the psalm instead of preaching sermons in church. There is an appointed psalm for every church service of the year, and yet, the psalm seems to hardly ever get a mention.
The psalms are mainly lyric poetry which is the most ancient kind of poetry. Lyric poetry is ‘that which directly expresses the individual emotions of the poet and religious lyric poetry is the expressions of those emotions and feelings as they are stirred by the thought of God and directed God-wards.’ (Kirkpatrick: 1939, ix-x.)
The book of psalms is like the ancient hymn book of the Jews, which has taken God-knows-how-long to put together. It gives powerful expression to all emotions and attitudes. When one reads the psalms it is obvious that they are hardly Christian texts! Perhaps that is why following the recitation of a psalm Christians often “baptise” the psalm by saying the Trinitarian Gloria: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.”
Christian worship has retained the psalms, particularly when it comes to daily morning, and evening, prayer, because Christians have always upheld that Christ is latently present in all the least likely places. Christ is present in you.
One of the reasons my mind has been turning to the psalm must be that our developing choir at S Cynfarch & S Mary’s has been singing the psalm from time to time. I always enjoy hearing from people who used to sing in the church choir in the past, and, if you are interested in the new choir Mrs Llinos Edwards would be happy to take your enquiry on 01824 704464.
